The objectives of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, which is also known as MGNREGA, will be discussed in this study. What is the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act?

The MGNREGA or “Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act” is an act created by the government of India in 2005. This is also known by the name of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. This act helps in providing 100 days guarantee of labour work to the people of rural areas in a “financial year”.

The MRD or “Ministry of Rural Development “is responsible for tracking the implementation of this policy. The aim for which this act has been developed is to empower the rural people. Many unskilled workers are provided to them which can be done by them without prior skill in the field. This has a huge contribution to reducing the rate of poverty in India.

Importance of National Rural Employment policy

The importance of the national rural policies is to help the populations in getting employment so that poverty can be reduced significantly in the states. The “Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act” has been created by the government of India in order to provide employment to the people under this act.

The main objective of this policy is to increase the livelihood quality in the rural areas and to provide a minimum employment guarantee to the people of the rural areas. However, this policy gives a guarantee to provide employment only for 100 days in a financial year. This act also provides wage employment.

There are many people in the rural areas that are unskilled. This employment guarantee act helps those people by providing 100 days of unskilled employment in a financial year. The cost-sharing is done by the central and state governments. 

The ratio of financial assistance between the central government and the state government of Kerala is 90:10 respectively. On the other hand, another importance of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment act is to create sufficient assets for developing the rural areas.

Permissible works in National Rural Employment guarantee policy

Conservation of water to the harvesting of water is a permissible work in this employment policy. Tree plantation is another type of work offered by this employment policy. On the other hand, afforestation is another permissible work in this policy.

Irrigation canals work and provision of the irrigations, bonding of farm and development of land are some of the important types of work which falls under this National Rural Employment guarantee policy. Apart from that, control of floods and protecting the drainage are also important permissible works in this policy.
