Pronouns are words or a group of words that substitute the use of nouns in a sentence. The pronoun words are used in place of a noun that is mentioned in a sentence and the name of that noun is not defined specifically. The pronoun is the word that makes the use of nouns in a sentence less and provides a meaningful sentence in the English language. The meaning of a sentence is not affected by the use of pronouns and it refers to the noun that is already defined in a sentence and that noun is not used specifically by name in the further phrases of the sentence.
Classification of pronouns
The classification of pronouns is done as per the use and behaviour of the pronoun words and the words are divided into eight types that are as follows:
Personal pronoun
A personal pronoun is a simple word that is used to replace a specific name that is a noun for the sentence. In other ways, it can be said that the personal pronoun is used to replace the noun that is the first person in the sentence. The proper name of a person is substituted by the personal pronoun such as the Ram, Shyam, etc. In place of these names in a sentence, one can use “he” which gives the same meaning of the sentence as before.
Reflexive pronoun
The reflexive pronouns are the pronouns that are made by adding self or selves’ words in the first person of the sentence. The reflexive pronoun is the pronoun that is used when the subject of the sentence and object of the same sentence is the same. As per the name, the pronoun is used to reflect the subject of a sentence when the object of that sentence is also the subject. Eg- himself, themselves, ourself
Possessive pronoun
The possessive pronoun is the pronoun that is used to show ownership and possession and it can be defined as the word that is used to replace the noun phrase of a sentence and provides the meaning of the sentence as using the noun phrase. There are two types of possessive pronouns that are singular and plural. In case a possessive pronoun refers to only one noun then it is called singular and in case the pronoun refers to more than one noun then it is known as the plural possessive pronoun. Eg- mine, yours, theirs
Demonstrative pronoun
The pronouns are used to describe something or to indicate something known as the demonstrative pronoun. Examples of demonstrative pronouns are these, that, those, etc.
Relative pronoun
The pronoun that is used in the connection of a dependent clause to an independent clause is known as the relative pronoun. It is usually used in relation to someone or something else. Eg- that, whose, whoever
Indefinite pronoun
The pronoun that is used to address a specific person or things without pointing directly however points indirectly then the pronoun is called the indefinite pronoun such as anyone, anybody, and many more.
Interrogative pronoun
The pronoun that is used in the process of asking questions in an easy way is known as the interrogative pronoun which means it is used in the interrogative functions. An example of interrogative pronouns is “whom do you go with?’. This pronoun is used only in the questioning of anyone.
Reciprocal pronoun
The reciprocal pronoun is a pronoun that is used to represent two or more two subjects of a sentence in case both the subjects are acting in the same way. The two subjects of a sentence react to each other in the same manner then the reciprocal pronoun is used. Eg- love each other, hate each other
Pronoun examples
The examples of pronouns are as follows:
- He is going.
- She is reading
- I hurt myself.
