The knowledge of understanding the contribution of prepositions regarding the direction and location is going to be discussed in this section.

Discussion

Definition of Preposition

A preposition is a word or a group of words that is used to represent the relationship between other words of a sentence. It tells about the direction, location, place, and time of a written sentence such as the time of any task happening, the place of happening something, and the direction of something. The meaning of the sentence changes in different contexts after using the prepositions because there are several definitions of various prepositions. The prepositional words are used in between the sentences because using them at the end of the sentence makes the sentence a grammatical error. The following part of English grammar is important because it helps in identifying the meaning of sentences and also the relationship between the words other than prepositional words. Prepositional words establish a meaningful relationship between the various words of a sentence so that the meaning of the sentence can be cleared. The preposition also helps in connecting a noun and pronoun to the verb and adjective used in the sentence to make clear meaning of the sentence.

Classification of Preposition

The preposition is classified into five different types to use as per the requirement of a sentence and the classifications are

Simple Prepositions

The simple and short word that is used before a noun and pronoun to establish or indicate the relationship of the noun to other phrases and sentences is known as the simple prepositions. Simple prepositions are the single words that are used before nouns and pronouns to make a clear meaning of a sentence that can help the reader in their understanding.

Compound Prepositions

The compound preposition is a word that is made by adding a prepositional word before the noun, adjective, and adverb so that it can be used in the sentence to make the sentence meaningful. The words that are made by the following process are along, above, between, etc. the stated words provide the clear meaning of a sentence.

Participle Prepositions

Participle prepositions are the words that are made from the verbs that end by “-ing” and “-ed”, to provide meaning to a sentence. In other words, it can be said that the participle preposition is the verb that acts as a preposition in a sentence to make the sentence meaningful. An example of using participle preposition is “The team leader sometimes gets frustrated with the employees of the organization”.

Double Prepositions

The use of two separate words or the prepositional words together to make a sentence meaningful is known as the double preposition. A compound preposition is also made by using two words together however it is different from the compound preposition because it is made by two separate words together. The “double preposition” is formed with the help of using two simple prepositions together. An example of using double prepositions is “The replenishing of renewable resources is up to nature”.

Phrase Prepositions

The prepositions that are made up of a preposition, an object, and the object modifier are called the phrase prepositions. The object gives meaning to a sentence by using a preposition and its modifier and also makes the sentence meaningful. The offices are closed because of the sudden emergence of the pandemic. In this sentence “because of” is the phrase preposition that is used to make the sentence meaningful.

Prepositions: Examples

The examples of prepositions are as follows:

  • He is hiding under the table.
  • I am sitting on a chair.
  • This copy belongs to Avinash.
  • Students were sitting by the tree.

Conclusion

It has been concluded from the above-stated section that the prepositions are the words that are used before the nouns and pronouns in a sentence to change a meaningless sentence into a meaningful sentence. The word preposition is made up of two words that are “pre” and “positions” that mean before and place respectively. The above section is prepared to provide a clear understanding of the use of prepositions in the English language. The types of prepositions are also discussed in this section.
