Phrasal Verbs

The term Phrasal Verb has been defined as the verb that is generally constructed with a main verb and with the help of an adverb and preposition.

The term Phrasal Verb  has been simply defined as the amalgamation of a verb and an adverb or preposition. Phrasal verbs are generally used informally. The phrasal verb has been made up of one or more words. It has been generally used by the native people during the time of informal conversation. The meaning of the phrasal verbs sometimes seems to be difficult to understand. There are some important examples of the Phrasal verb: “hurry up”, “give up”, “chill out”, and so on. 

Definition of Phrasal Verbs 

The term Phrasal Verb has been defined as the fusion of an adverb and a preposition. It can also be made up of both an adverb and a preposition. The amalgamated meaning of the verb generally differs from the actual meaning of the separate words. This has been termed as an informal way of carrying on the conversation between the natives. However, sometimes it has been proved difficult to understand the meaning of the phrasal verbs. It generally denotes specified activity at a specific time. Thus it can be defined that the phrasal verbs have consisted of a basic verb and an additional verb or preposition. The phrasal verbs generally make a relatively short phrase by linking up two or more words, thus it has been termed as phrasal verbs. There are some important phrasal verbs that are used frequently: “give up”, “carry on”, “break up”, “carry out”, and so on. 

Classification of Phrasal Verbs

The term Phrasal verb has been classified into two types. They are “Transitive Phrasal Verbs” and “Intransitive Phrasal Verbs”. The Transitive Phrasal verbs have been defined as a verb that has been made up of an object. In the case of transitive phrasal verbs, the object can be placed between the verbs, or otherwise, it can be placed after placing adverbs or the prepositions. The examples of transitive verbs are maintain, love, admire, and so on. 

Transitive verbs are also classified into two types. They are separable transitive verbs and inseparable transitive verbs. The separable transitive phrasal verbs have been defined as the verbs, the particle of which can be separated from the verb and put by the noun phrase as its item. The particles are isolated from the verb when the object is used in the shape of a pronoun. The examples of separable transitive verbs are take off, put off, set off, and so on. The inseparable phrasal verbs are also termed transitive verbs. However, in this case, the object cannot be placed between the phrasal verbs. They cannot be separated, thus they are called inseparable transitive phrasal verbs. The examples of the inseparable transitive verbs are “fall off”, “splash out”, “dip into”, and so on. Intransitive phrasal verbs can be termed as phrasal verbs with no proper object in them. In this case, the action of the verbs has not been mentioned properly. The examples of the intransitive phrasal verbs are “arrive” and “die”. The proper action of the verb cannot be determined in this case.

Evaluation of Phrasal Verbs

In order to make the sentence more ornamental, the phrasal verbs can be used in a particular sentence. The usage of the phrasal verb has become important to increase the English fluency of the people. The phrasal verbs are very important in mastering the English language. The phrasal verbs prove to be useful to express a particular idea in a more easy way. The phrasal verbs are generally familiar with an informal conversation between people. Without using a phrasal verb in a sentence it would not sound natural during the time of an informal conversation. It also helps a non-English speaker to sound like a native speaker by using phrasal verbs in a sentence. Sometimes the learners face various problems regarding the understanding of the meaning of the phrasal verbs. However, it can be easy to understand after considering the situation properly. The phrasal verbs need to be checked twice before putting them otherwise it can totally change the context of the situation. 

Process of using Phrasal verbs

There are some processes of using phrasal verbs in a particular sentence. The phrasal verbs need not be grouped by the verbs; they need to be paired with specific particles. The phrasal verbs need to be aligned properly with the topic. The users need to understand the topic at first and they must put the phrasal verb by aligning it with the topic. In case it has not been properly used, the meaning of the sentence will be changed. On the other hand, sometimes phrasal verbs have been used as normal verbs in some cases. The phrasal verbs generally express a sole unit of lexicon expression.

Phrasal verbs are the products of amalgamation of a main verb with an adverb or a preposition. The unique nature of the phrasal verbs is that they can be separable and worked out with different objects.  The process of using the phrasal verbs in a sentence is important as an inappropriate phrasal verb would change the meaning of the entire sentence. The usage of phrasal verbs in a sentence makes the sentence ornamental.
