The following word may be a common noun, a proper noun or even a verb. An adjective is not rigid in nature; it can sit before almost any kind of word from the given options.

Previously, Adjectives were to be considered the most important parts of speech in the English language although historically they were merged with the nouns. Nowadays words that are said to be Adjectives like this, my, etc. are merged up separately with determiners. In certain languages, Adjectives are comparable and the comparison of Adjectives is also known as the Degree of Adjectives. In the languages which allow adjectives to get compared, there are different means present to indicate the comparisons.

Comparison of Adjectives

An adjective is the word which changes a noun phrase or a noun or explains its reference. Its role is very simple just to change the details given by noun or noun phrase.  In certain languages, Adjectives are comparable and the comparison of Adjectives is also known as the Degree of Adjectives. For example in English, a person may be clever, another person might be cleverer than this, there might be another person who is the cleverest one.

Here the word ‘more’ changes the adjective ‘clever’ to explain comparisons being made between them and ‘most’ changes the adjective to indicate superiority among them. In the languages which allow adjectives to get compared, there are different means present to indicate the comparisons. There are three degrees of Adjectives: they are positive, comparative, and superlative.

Degree Of Adjectives

Positive Degree – The positive degree of an adjective is the simplest form of a particular adjective.

Comparative Degree – The comparative degree suggests a one-step higher of positive degree. It is generally used to compare two things or persons. For example, the comparative degree of good would be better and its superlative Degree would be best.

Superlative Degree – The superlative Degree signifies the highest degree of quality. The superlative degree is used to compare more than two things or persons.

Remember that comparative and superlative degrees can be formed by adding r, st or er, est or more, and most like substance to the positive degree of adjective.

Examples of positive degree are as follows: –

  • Victor is tallboy

  • Siya is a clever girl

  • Shanaya is beautiful

  • The cat runs quickly

  • Rohan is smart
