Classical Greek and Latin writing featured little or no gap between words and was written in boustrophedon (alternating directions). Text orientation (left to right) became standardized throughout time, as did the use of word dividers and terminal punctuation. The original paragraphs were used to break sentences into groups, analogous to an underscore at the start of a new group. The Greek parágraphos developed into the pilcrow, which may be found in line between phrases in English texts from the Middle Ages. In the same way, the hedera leaf (e.g.) has been employed.
A line break (newline) followed by an initial at the start of the next paragraph was another method of dividing sentences into paragraphs in ancient manuscripts. TO BOLD, ITALICS, AND UNDERLINE THE WORDS IN MS
