Emulsions And Liposomes

Emulsion is a mixture of two or more than two liquids in physical chemistry. On the other hand, liposomes are minute round shaped vesicles consisting of cholesterol and phospholipids.

The liposome is the spherical vesicle that has at least a single lipid bi-layer. In other words, it is also called the drug-delivering vehicle that administers the nutrients. They are regarded as one of the main reagents and tools in different scientific disciplines that help theoretical physics, chemistry, biophysics, and many other subjects. On other hand, the emulsion is a kind of mixture that consists of two liquids in which one component is present as the droplet. They are formed from the “component liquids” either more often or more spontaneously. The unstable emulsions are the separate types of the two liquid layers and the stable emulsions react as the opposite from the other.

Definition of Liposome

The liposome is something that helps to deliver the microscopic substances and is the kind of composed vesicles. These types of molecules have a tail that is “hydrophobic” and is considered as the “hydrophilic head region”. At the time when the two membranes come towards each other, the hydrophobic tails attract them. This double layer forms a phospholipids molecule that is the internal solution from the outside. These solutions can be transported with the liposome that is needed in the end. The micelle is quite similar to the liposome but it needs to be differentiated. The micelle consists of a single layer whereas the liposome consists of double layers. The liposome can be regulated naturally when the tissues are distributed.

Function of Liposome

  • Liposome has been used for therapeutic application compared to many other formulations that are present in the biochemist world. There are many important functions of the liposome such as site avoidance, site-specific, and many others. The basic use of the site avoidance of cytotoxic drugs is to deal with cancers.
  • These are used to prepare the drugs that can also be provided to the cancer patients’ therapies. It is used in many ways according to the acceptance of the patient and will work for them properly. This drug delivery among the patients can also produce the side effect of toxicity in the heart. Still, it is a very useful and crucial thing that will help for the better improvement of cancer patients.
  • The second function, which is site-specific targeting, works to prevent bone cancer. The patients who are having the extra cancer cells in their body and when diagnosed have been provided this particular drug to deal with the disease. These are some of the roles that the liposome plays to deal with deadly diseases.

Definition of Emulsion

The emulsion is a kind of mixture that is a collaboration of two different liquids in which one component is present as a droplet and the other is a different one. They either are formed from the component liquids spontaneously or can be formed very often. Emulsions are of two major kinds one is the stable emulsions and the other is the unstable emulsions. On one hand, the stable emulsions can be demolished through the inactivation of emulsifying agents; on the other hand, the unstable emulsions are the separate forms of the two liquid layers. These emulsions are so important in many fields such as in the tanning and dyeing industries. It is used in the preparation of some cosmetic things such as shampoos. It is also so useful for the preparation of the cream, mayonnaise, butter, and many more things. Synthetic rubbers, plastics have also been made through the help of this emulsion. Often this emulsion term is used to present the mixed systems that can be classified as the gels, some sort of solutions, and many more.

Types of Liposome

There are 3 different types of liposomes such as MLV (Multilamellar vesicles),SUV (Small unilamellar vesicles) and LUV (large unilamellar vesicles). Multilamellar vesicles consist of different hydrophobic domains inside the membrane. Multilamellar vesicles are exclusively used for the encapsulation or coating of hydrophobic medicines such as medicine of steroids. MLV liposome is noticed to be regulated by both aqueous solubility and hydrophobicity. On the other hand, small unilamellar vesicles or LUV liposomes are generally larger in size of 0.1 to 1 micrometer. Large liposome is composed of single double layer phospholipids and it captures hydrophobic materials in the aqueous space of liposomes. Reverse-phase evaporation is utilized for the preparation of large unilamellar vesicles. Lastly, the SUV or small unilamellar vesicles are below the size of 100 nm. The formation of small unilamellar vesicles greatly relies on the temperature. These are usually made by the process of Sonication. These SUVs constantly fuse if the transition temperature of the lipid constructing vesicle drops significantly.

Conclusion

The whole study is based on the different aspects of the liposome and the emulsions. These formulations work in different manners in their zones. On one hand, the liposome is a crucial thing that helps to deal with all the deadliest diseases, specifically cancer. On the other hand, the emulsion also helps in some medical therapies but it is mainly used in the chemical zones. These things have their roles and work consistently according to the role. These are the parts of biochemistry and this whole study will assist future scholars to understand the research study.
