Conclusion

The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) took place in Johannesburg, South Africa, from August 26 to September 4, 2002. Its purpose was to conduct a ten-year evaluation of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development and to re-energize global commitment to sustainable development. The WSSD’s focus on social development is a natural extension of the challenges and concerns about human development raised during the Earth Summit. The summit’s objectives also include halving maternal mortality rates. Statistics on past national reductions in maternal mortality over a 10-year period is much harder to come by than data on childhood mortality reductions..
