The World Confederation of Labour, established in the year 1920, had the major objective of improving workers' living standards.

The World Confederation of Labour was established in 1920 under the name of the International Federation of Christian Trade Unions. The major objective of this federation was to improve the limited standard of working conditions by providing them human rights, dignity, problems, etc. In the era of 1930s, the World Confederation of Labour suffered several problems due to the rise of Fascism, World War 2, and the Cold War era. Though, in the 1950s, the reformation of WCL took place. In 2006, the World Confederation of Labour merged with the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, which led to the rise of the International Trade Union Confederation.

WHAT IS THE WORLD CONFEDERATION OF LABOUR?

The World Confederation of Labour is a small-scale labour federation. It came into existence under the name of the International Federation of Christian Trade Unions in the year 1920. However, by the end of 1968, the name was reconstituted as World Confederation of Labour (WCL). This federation is recognized at the national, regional, and international levels as well. It is a composition of trade union sectors as well as non-trade union associations. In the year 1968, when WCL got its official recognition, the consistency of active members was around 12.7 million, which included 74 countries regarding trade unions. The basic motive of the World Confederation of Labour Wars was to give workers labour rights as well as enhance the awareness of human dignity, international solidarity, and democracy.

STRUCTURE OF WORLD CONFEDERATION OF LABOUR:

The World Confederation of Labour was founded in 1920 under the name of the International Federation of Christian Trade Unions. It was based upon the motive of improving the trade unions. WCL postulated several rules for spreading the awareness of human rights, neglecting child labor, providing the standards to migrant workers, improving the economics of the society, etc. In the year 1968, it was reconstituted as the World Confederation of Labour. WCL increases efforts to improve the living standard of the laborers and resolve several problems associated with child labor and women workers, etc. By the year 2006, WCL got merged with the International Confederation of Free Trade Union, which led to the development of the International Trade Union Confederation.

AREAS OF ACTIVITY:

The World Confederation of Labour had its pace over several areas of labour activity. Some of the major activities that WCL undertook are:

  • Women workers: the WCL focused on several problems related to women workers. The committee that was associated with undertaking the problems related to the women workers was the World Women’s Committee.
  • Child labor: WCL played an active role in preventing child labor in stopping the association to the most. The ILO Conviction 182 clearly stated the forms related to child labor and the consequences.
  • Migrant workers: in terms of the globalised economy of the world, the WCL game, the rights of migrants. It provided the provision for the migrants to be a human or a worker, which allows them a free migration right.
  • Human rights in international labour standards: World Confederation of Labour focuses on the establishment of various international laws to protect human rights. WCL also played an active part in the introduction of various labour standards into the trade policies at the international level.
  • Training: World Confederation of Labour established the provision of training during the recruitment, which provided confined building areas for training the local unionists.

OBJECTIVE OF WORLD CONFEDERATION OF LABOUR:

World configuration of labour composed of various objectives, neglecting various problems of the economic society. It had the main focus on the development of trade unions and also the spread of awareness of several freedoms and rights. The major objective of WCL are:

  • Provide the full provision of trade union freedom.
  • It focuses on providing the proper support and help required by the countries and collaborating actively with them.
  • Spreading awareness of various workers’ rights.
  • Focuses on improving the workers living conditions.
  • Within a proper, healthy relationship between the countries and organisation.
  • Provide the freedom rights for the migration.
  • It is a whiter role in uplifting the standards of the workers.

IMPORTANT MEMBERS:

While the configuration of labour versus tablets in the year 1920 under the name of International Federation of Christian Trade Union, whose first general secretary was just Jos Serrarens, along with the President, Josef Scherrer. Several general secretaries that were appointed after the retirement of Jos Serranrens were August Vanistendael, Carlos Custer, Willy Thys, etc. Several appointments of presidents were also made after Josef Scherrer Bernhard Otte held office. Basile Mahan Gahe is the present President of the World Confederation of Labour.

CONCLUSION:

The World Confederation of Labour was established in the year 1920 under the name of the International Federation of Christian Trade Unions, which had the main objective of increasing the economy of the society and providing training, providing migration rights to the workers to uplift their living standards. However, it suffered various difficulties during World War 2 and the Cold War era, after which it was renamed in the year 1968, which came to be known as the World Confederation of Labour. Furthermore, in 2006, the World Confederation of Labour merged with the International Confederation of a Free trade union to form the International Trade Union Confederation, which had the same goals as that of the World Confederation of labour.
