United Nations World Water Development Report

The UN World Water Development Report (WWDR) focuses on the issue of sanitation and water. It describes the various opportunities and challenges faced for water management systems in sustainable development.

The main aim of WWDR is to manage the various challenges, potential responses and opportunities related to climate change in terms of migration and adaptation. It provides a comprehensive and authoritative assessment of the states. It presents a balanced neutral account of the freshwater management system. WWDR tries to achieve several sustainable development goals so that no further freshwater pollution takes place. In case improper management of the water takes place, it will have a severe impact on the water balance of nature. The report mainly stresses the various strategic issues to implement the sustainable utilisation of water resources.

World Water Development project

The World Water Assessment Programme releases the WWDR every year from the UN. The report highlights the various challenges faced in different parts of the world by the management of freshwater level by the strategic issues. The report also tries to focus on the wastewater management system. The water level varies in different parts of the world. This is because the ground level varies from country to country. Similarly, different regions face problems particular to that region. An in-depth analysis of the challenges and resources related to Millennium Development Goals are done.

World Water Day is celebrated every year on 22 March. It tries to make potable water accessible to people all over the world. Due to climatic changes, wastewater is increasing, whereas the freshwater level is decreasing. It is the responsibility of the general public to mitigate the several risks and challenges associated with the preservation of freshwater. Raising awareness regarding the preservation of freshwater and enforcing the practice of rainwater harvesting is made mandatory by the report across the world.

Importance of World Water Development Report

The WWDR focuses on implementing the strategies so that the various sustainable development goals can be achieved. Conserving water is important so that it can be kept clean and pure. Every living organism is directly reliant on water sources for its livelihood. Water must be rendered pollution-free. In this modern era of industrialisation and globalisation, environmental pollution has reached its zenith. An enormous problem of the world is the scarcity of fresh drinking water because 75% of the world is made up of water, but the major part of it is saline.

The hydrological system must be properly maintained so that a balance in the ecosystem is established. The rising temperature due to global warming has led to the melting of the ice caps. As a result, the water level of the world is rising. Hence, the lowlands are getting flooded, destroying the habitat of that region. Hence, water is the most important natural resource. As a result, it is essential to preserve freshwater and prohibit the misuse of water. Research has revealed that an individual uses 75 to 100 gallons of water every day. This personal use must be restricted so that freshwater can be preserved.

Strategies adopted for World Water Development

Several strategies have been adopted worldwide so that proper water preservation can be done. Proper strategies must be adopted to dispose of the polluted water can be done properly. The water released from the various sewage effluents must be treated properly to be rendered pollution-free. Decreasing the level of run-offs shall help to enhance the water infiltration rate through the soil. Adoption of contour cultivation or terrace farming processes helps to preserve water to a certain level.

The bench terracing process also helps to preserve water and reduce the rate of run-offs. Using surfactants or chemical wetting agents enhances the water uptake rate of the soil. Thus, minimises water spoilage or loss. Water must be reduced, and rainwater harvesting must be done so that the water from rainfall can be stored and utilised later on for domestic purposes. Treatment of wastewater will provide potable drinking water.

Conclusion

Water preservation and conservation have become critical issues of the contemporary world. The WWDR published by the UN every year focuses on adopting the various ways and strategies for saving drinking water and reducing the rate of wastewater. The freshwater must be preserved, and several awareness programmes and campaigns must be held so that water preservation takes place and misuse of water gets prohibited. Adopting different agricultural methods like terrace farming, contour ploughing, and so on shall facilitate water preservation. Rainwater harvesting shall aid later in the domestic use purpose, and wastewater treatment must be done.
