“BRICS 2020 summit” was the 12th BRICS summit. The BRICS 2020 was going to be held between 21 to 23rd July 2020. However, the global Covid-19 pandemic forced The BRICS 2020 summit to be held via video conference.

India, Russia, Brazil, China and South Africa are the countries associated with the BRICS summits. The 12th BRICS summit was supposed to be held around the month of July 2020. However, the Covid-19 pandemic forced the summit to be held via video conference. The “BRICS summit 2020 theme” were “BRICS partnerships associated with global stability, shared security and growth due to innovation”. Due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the BRICS countries, the 2020 summit played a major role in stabilizing the economies of each country. 

History of BRICS Summit

BRICS is an acronym of countries that have the potential for an increased economy. Brazil, China, India, South Africa and Russia are part of BRICS summits which are held manually. Each of the BRICS Summit is hosted by countries that take the responsibility or leading role regarding the discussions and agendas associated with the summit. Russia was the host of the BRICS summit 2020. It was the 12th BRICS summit and previously Russia took the leadership role in the 7th BRICS summit. The primary concern of the countries involved in BRICS summit 2020 was to tackle the after-effects of the Covid-19 pandemic while maintaining a sustainable economic position.

Important points discussed inside the BRICS 2020 Summit

Following are several major points that were discussed inside the “BRICS 2020 summit”

  • During the speech given by the Indian prime minister issues such as terrorism and security issues were discussed in alignment with the theme of the summit. The Indian prime minister forged all the BRICS nations to not support terrorist activities across the world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expresses his concerns regarding the spread of the global Covid-19 pandemic. The Prime minister expressed his support regarding the delivery of medical supplies across the world. India provides effective medicine support for over 130 countries of the world. PM Modi mentioned that India will work with BRICs nations to produce the vaccines associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • One of the major points mentioned by the Indian president was the inauguration of the Atmanirbhar Bharat Campaign. The meaning of the word Atmanirbhar is self-reliant. India is looking to build an economic resurgence by adopting a self-reliant approach that will be essential for taking a major part in the post-pandemic global economic environment.   
  • The prime minister of China Xi Jinping expresses the support of China for other BRICS nations regarding the Covid-19 vaccine. The president promised that China will provide the necessary help to other BRICS nations regarding the vaccine development programmes
  • The Chinese prime minister has promised that it will help the BRICS countries to create a partnership for a revolution centre within Xiamen. This revolution centre will be used for finding solutions for industrial solutions.
  • China offered their support regarding the terrorism strategy adopted by other BRICS nations
  • The host country President Vladimir Putin mentioned that cooperation among BRICS countries is essential for tackling the after-effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Joint support was mentioned by the Russian President to tackle the challenges associated with Covid-19 vaccine development programmes
  • Russia tried to convince its other BRICS counterparts to create an establishment that will be used for Covid-19 vaccine development programmes

Importance of BRICS summit 2020

The BRICS Summit held in 2020 had major implications for all other BRICS countries. However, India used the BRICS Summit to initiate talks with China regarding the detonation of the pressure development across the India-China Borders. Terrorism and security concerns were discussed in the BRTICs summit due to the increase of inline threats across multiple government sectors. India and China celebrated their 70-year diplomatic relationship by initiating talks at the BRICS summit. The BRICS 2020 summit held in Russia was essential for improving the “International Relations” across the BRICS nations. 

Conclusion

It can be concluded that this assessment has been developed to provide an overview associated with the BRICS 2020 summit held in Russia. The summit was postponed due to the effects of the global Covid-19 pandemic. 17th January 2020 was the date that was fixed for hoisting the BRICS summit 2020. India and China promised to provide the necessary help for mitigating the after-effects of the Pandemic. Terrorism and structural changes were discussed inside the summit as per the summit theme. India announced the inauguration of the Self-reliant campaign within the BRICS 2020 summit that will be essential for maintaining sustainable economic growth for India.

The Russian city Saint Petersburg was used for hosting the video conference.
