This assignment has been developed by describing the deeds of Ibn Battuta, who was a great traveller of Indian history. He has discovered many places of this world, the experiences he gathered in that time being has been collected in his memoir. This is the main reason this character is important in the history of India. The way Battuta described Tughlaq is also important, as through this lots of things can be understood of sultan Tughlaq. In this study Battuta’s travel, memoir and his importance in the history have been described.
Ibn Battuta
Ibn battuta or Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Battuta was one of the great Muslim scholars and travellers of Indian History. It can be said that he was a Moroccan traveller, he had written many famous travel logs and he was a famous writer too. One of his famous travel logs is Rihlah. In his travel log, he has described how much he loved travelling, in that log he had written about different places, people, cultures, and it was written from his own experience of travelling. It was his thirst for knowing everything, which made a place in Indian history for him. The knowledge he had about places, and different cultures are interesting. He was a heroic figure of History he had proved that he has portrayed how he overcome all the hurdles that comes in the way of his travelling, he handled them all alone.
Ibn Battuta as a traveller
It has already been mentioned that Ibn battuta was a great traveller and he was a traveller from Morocco. He had discovered many places in his lifetime. History says that he has travelled almost 75,000 miles in his lifetime, and he travelled across and beyond the world of Islam. The urge of knowing everything that exists, the urge of seeing every place of this world had made him a traveller. He used the things he had learned throughout his travels. He got to experience different things at every point of travel. Along with that, he got different kinds of gifts on the journey; kings of different places welcomed him with unique gifts. For example, he was showered with fine clothes, many horses, sometimes he was even gifted with slaves. He got to learn many things from the journey of his travelling. Ibn Battuta crossed th black sea from turkey then he went to the domain of golden Horde khan, in his court Bqattuta was welcomed very warmly, later the visit he was accompanied from there with one of Uzbeg’s wives to Constantinopole. He was the best traveller of the 1300’s era, thre was nobody else who can give competition to Battuta.
Ibn Battuta’s Memoir
All his experiences can be found in his memoir which was his travel book. Battuta has written which places he had visited how he felt, how that place’s culture is, all had been written in that memoir. He arrived in India in the year 1334, which was the ruling period of Mohammad Bin Tughlaq. He had written his experience of visiting India in his memoir. After his arrival, he was gifted with 2,000 silver diners by Tughlaq. Along with that Tughlaq offered him a job in his court, a job of the judge also offered him a salary of 5,000 silvers. Battuta did not turn him down, he took the job at his court, a Tughlaq a well-furnished house to stay in. these are some of the discussions of his memoir apart from this there are discussions about memories of the Tughlaq dynasty and the tortures of the Tughlaq dynasty. He was the one who has experienced the ruling period of Tughlaq by being by his side. His travel book includes all these things, his travelling experiences, his experiences with different rulers.
Ibn Battuta’s importance in Indian History
There is the importance of Ibn Battuta in Indian history. He has written about India so well that, he described a particular time in his memoir which is Rihla. Through his book, the ruling time of Mohammad Bin Tughlaq has been understood. Tughlaq’s decisions, his tortures and every aspect of Tughlaq have been portrayed in Battuta’s book. Battuta showed the socio-political factors of the 1300 era. It was the Battuta through whom people were able to know about Tughlaq’s ruling period. Apart from that, his travelling experiences are something that people should know; in the history of India his travels are always important. His book is considered as one of the important sources of Indian history.
