Land taxation is known as the Dahsala system which was introduced in 1580 AD. by Mughal emperor Akbar. At the time of the reign of Mughal emperor Akbar, the system of land taxation was introduced to the people. At that point in time, Raja Todarmal was the finance minister in the Mughal court and he had introduced this system. The taxation system or tax collection system was mainly introduced and organized for the other religions specifically.
Discussion on the Mughal Empire
Mughal Empire was one of the largest empires around the world which have been considered as the early modern empire in south Asia. The Mughal Empire has stretched for about two centuries around the south Asian countries. The empire has been gathered from the Indus basin in the western region, Afghanistan to Kashmir in the north, Assam to Bangladesh in the eastern region and Deccan in South India. According to some historians, the founder of the Mughal Empire was Babur in 1526. Babur had spread the branches of the Mughal Empire in India after defeating the sultan of Delhi, Ibrahim Lodhi. Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodhi and became the emperor in India in the first Panipat battle on 21st April 1526.
The Mughal reign spread to the upper part of India with the help of Babur after defeating Afghans and Rajputs. The Mughal Empire was structurally established at the time of Akbar who was the grandson of Babur. The empire of the Mughal lasted up to 1720 until the death of the last emperor Aurangzeb. At the time of the Aurangzeb, the Mughal emperor had been extended subsequently. Maratha defeated the Mughal and the ten last emperors Aurangzeb and East India Company came to show its dominance to India and the whole world. The Mughal empire started degrading after the Rebellion of 1857 and by the East India Company and later, British raj.
The base of the Mughal empire and its wealth developed during the reign of Akbar. Akbar was the third emperor of the Mughal and he had been introduced to various taxation systems which helped to grow the wealth of the emperor. Akbar had been introduced to the silver currency and it had been the main exchange currency at that time. The Mughal made some forts which are now considered world heritage sites by UNESCO. These sites are “Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb, Lahore Fort, and the Taj Mahal”. Tajmahal was made by Shah Jahan and is considered the most precious monument and considered as a world heritage site.
Discussion on Dahsala System
The Dahsala system is considered as the taxation system of the Mughals which was formulated by Akbar in 1580 A.D. The finance minister of Akbar, Raja Todar mal had introduced this taxation system after few changes as directed by Akbar.
Under it, the average produce of different crops along with the average prices prevailing over the last ten years were calculated and one-third share of the average produce was apportioned to the state. The system was adopted only in a few provinces of the Empire which included Multan, Delhi, Allahabad, Awadh, Agra, and Lahore.
The land taxation system was appreciated as the most effective and convenient record and revenue system in the whole history. The Dahsala system had changed the system of land measurement from rope to bamboo strips with iron rings. The new method of measurement had been more accurate than the rope measurement method of land measurement. There are four categories of land which have been discussed under the Dahsala system. Polaj land or cultivated land, Parauti land or not cultivated, Chachar land or uncultivated for 3-4 years and Banjar land or not cultivated more than 4 years.
