Full Form of LCD

LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. LCD is used in Televisions, smart phones, instrument panels and computer monitors. This display is very sharp and crisp and generates high definition pictures that are extremely enjoyable and give a thrilling experience to watch. LCD is constructed with “millions of pixels” that generate a high definition picture rich in look and quality. Picture quality is mainly dependent on the pixel density or number of pixels. This particular topic covers the work procedure of LCD, the full form of LCD, different types of LCDs by stating their functions and also the advantages and disadvantages of LCD.

LCD is built up with “millions of pixels” and produces a high definition picture. Pixel controlling capacity of every type of display is different from each other. For example, LED, CRT, LCD are all premium quality displays, and handling pixels for these displays is quite different. A picture is made with thousands of pixels, and the more the pixel density will be, the more the picture quality will be high. 

LCD is a premium range of display, and presently the use of LCDs is increasing day by day as people prefer light and thin display types rather than big displays.  

Work Procedure of LCD 

A picture can be good or bad, but the picture’s quality depends on pixels and pixels are controlled by displays. In terms of talking about the work procedure of LCDs, LCDs are the newer types of displays, and their way of managing pixels is different from traditional or older types of displays. For example, “LCDS are lit by a backlight”, and the pixels are electronically switched off and on “when using liquid crystals to rotate polarised light”. 

“A polarised glass filter” is situated both behind and in front of all pixels, and the angle at which the front filter is placed is 90 degrees. LCDs are composed of either passive-matrix or active matrix display grids. Active matrix LCDs are known as “Thin Film Transistor (TFT) display”. 

Types of LCDs 

Different types of LCDs are mentioned below. 

  • Twisted Nematic (TN)
  • Vertical Alignment Panels (VA Panels)
  • In Panel Switching Displays (IPS Panels)
  • Advance Field Fringe Switching (AFFS)

These are the different types of LCDs that have different functions, and the working procedures of these displays are also different from each other. For example, TN displays are inexpensive and highly responsive at times. On the other hand, IPS Panels produce “better contrast ratios.” 

Advantages of LCD 

There are some advantages of using LCDs that are mentioned below. 

  • LCDs are less power consuming as compared to LED and CRT.
  • LCD Displays are low in cost.
  • LCDs are composed of “some microwatts for display” compared to “some mill watts for LEDs.
  • LCDs provide brilliant contrast.
  • LCDs are lighter and thinner in weight than LED and “Cathode-Ray Tube”.

The advantages of this display make it better and more efficient than the “Cathode-Ray tube, but there are some negative points because people prefer LED more than LCD.

Disadvantages of LCD 

Despite the advantages mentioned earlier, there are some limitations of using LCDs mentioned below.

  • LCDs require additional sources of light
  • The temperature range for operation is limited
  • Low reliability
  • Low speed
  • Requires AC drive

These are some disadvantages that make the quality of this display a bit lower in comparison to LED and OLED. Low speed and low reliability decrease LCD use among consumers and business purposes. They are switching to LED and OLED more than LCDs for a better experience.

LCDs are quite gentle quality displays that can give people a nice picture experience. Still, the technology moves faster and presently, the increasing trend of LED displays have reduced the usage of LCDs. Still, many people use LCDs in their daily lives because of their low cost. Moreover, the picture LCDs produce is not bad in quality; in fact, the picture has brilliant contrast and saturation, but now after the innovation of LED and OLED in the electronics world, the usage of LCDs has decreased. Technology requires that the LCDs are lagging compared to LED and OLEDs that are new in the markets.
