The IOQM is the initial stage of a math competition in India. It’s a 3-hour test with 30 questions, each requiring a whole number of answers between 00 and 99. The IOQM is organized collaboratively by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT), the Mathematics Teachers Association of India (MTAI), and the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (affiliated with the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – HBCSE).

Eligibility Criteria for IOQM 2024-25

  • Students born between August 1, 2004 and January 1, 2011, and studying in Class 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12, are eligible to write IOQM 2023. Please note that NO student born after January 1, 2011 will be allowed to write IOQM 2023.
  • The students who are fulfilling the above criteria and study in the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and Kendriya Vidyalaya will be eligible to appear in the IOQM. There will be no separate IOQM exam for the students of KV and JNV
  • INMO 2023 awardees will be eligible for the INMO 2024 without qualifying through the IOQM exam if they fulfil the eligibility criteria for IMO 2023 and EGMO 2024.
  • The student must be residing and studying in India since 30 October 2021 or earlier OR must be studying in an Indian school system since 30 October 2020 or earlier
  • It will be the responsibility of the students to ensure the described eligibility criteria are satisfied
  • The students must be eligible to hold an Indian Passport
  • According to the Madras High Court, the candidates with OCI status will not be eligible for the selection to the Indian team in the International Mathematical Olympiad
  • It is the responsibility of the students to ensure that the given eligibility criteria will be satisfied. In case it is found at any stage of the programme that a student does not meet the criteria, they may be disqualified for this programme

Qualification Criteria from IOQM to RMO

  1. A student has to score at least 10% of the total marks of the IOQM 2024 paper in order to be eligible to appear for RMO 2024 but this is NOT the sole qualifying criterion.
  1. Any student who has scored at least 10% of the total marks of the IOQM 2024 paper and enrolled for IOQM 2024 as a student of one of the classes 8,9,10,11 will be classified as a
Category A student.
  1. Any student who has scored at least 10% of the total marks of the IOQM 2024 paper and enrolled for IOQM 2024 as a student of class 12 will be classified as a Category B student.
  1. The list of students who qualify for the RMO 2023 will be prepared according to the following rule:
(a) From each region (list of regions: https://www.mtai.org.in/rmo-region-codes/)
  1. the top 200 students from Category A will qualify for RMO 2024along with those tied in the 200th position;
  1. the top 40 students from Category B will qualify for RMO 2024 along with those tied in the 40th position;
iii. 5 additional girl students from Category A irrespective of the number of girl students qualifying in the top 200 students from Category A will qualify for RMO 2024 under Girls’ quota. (b) There is no separate Girls’ quota for Category B. A girl student of Category B can qualify for RMO 2024 from IOQM 2024 if and only if she is selected among the top 40 students in Category B as described in the previous section (point 4(a)ii. above). IOQM 2024 Certificate criterion Any student who scores at least 10% of the total marks of the IOQM 2023 paper will receive a certificate.

Stages of Mathematical Olympiad

First stage exam

  • Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM)
  • The IOQM is being conducted by the Mathematics Teachers’ Association (India). More details about the IOQM will be announced in the first week of July 2024 on the MTA(I) websitehttps://www.mtai.org.in/. Date: September 3, 2024  Time: 10:00  to 13:00 hours (IST)
  1. Duration: 3 hours
  2. Total marks: 100
  3. The answer to each question is an integer in the range 00-99. No negative marking. OMR-based exam.
  4. Composition of the paper: 10 questions of 2 marks each; 10 questions of 3 marks each; 10 questions of 5 marks each.

Second stage exam

The Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO) is the second stage of this prestigious competition, and it presents a unique opportunity to challenge your mathematical skills. 
  • Date: October 29, 2024; Time: 13:00 to 16:00 hrs
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Number of questions: 6

Third stage exam

  • Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO)
  • Number of questions: 06 Date: January 21, 2024;  Time: 12:00 to 16:30 Hrs.
    1. Duration: 4.5 hours
    2. Each question requires writing detailed proof.
Stage Four – OCSC (Orientation Cum Selection Campus)
  • In this stage, the candidates will undergo some experimental and theoretical sessions and only 35 to 40 students from all over the country will be able to compete against each other to qualify for the next steps. At these camps, orientation is provided for the theoretical, observational and experimental tasks.
Stage Five – Pre Departure Camp
  • At this stage, the 4 to 6 students who qualify for this stage will go under the rigorous training programme. It will be held at HBCSE in theory and experiments. Special labs have been developed for this purpose.
Stage Six – International Olympiad 
  • This Olympiad programme culminates with the Indian students participation (4-6) in the IMO. The students will be accompanied by some teachers.
