UN is an international organization that was established on October 24, 1945. It was the 2nd multipurpose international organization which was established in the 20th century. The headquarter of the Union Nations is in New York City and it has regional offices in Vienna, Geneva, and Nairobi. The official languages are English, French, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish and Russian.
The main aim of the United Nations is –
“To save the succeeding generations from the scourge of war, to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights,.. also establish the condition under which respect and justice for the obligations arising from other resources and treaties of international law can be maintained, better standards of life and promote social progress.”
In the addition to maintaining security and peace, the other important objective includes the develop friendly relation among the countries. This includes the principle of equal rights, achieving worldwide cooperation and self-determination of peoples. Which will help to solve social, economic, cultural and international problems, and serve as the centre where the countries can coordinate their activities and actions towards these ends.
History of United Nations Day
On October 24, 1945, the United Nations was officially established. After 2 years, In 1947, the United Nations General Assembly announced the Charter of the UN as the one which shall be devoted to making known to the people of the world who aims and achievements of the UN and gaining support for this work. In a year, 1971, the organization adopted the United Nations Resolution 2782 and they declared that the United Nations Day ought to be an international observance. October 24, is also considered a public holiday too. United Nations Day gives the opportunity to amplify the common aim and reaffirm the principles and purposes of the UN Charter that has guided the nation for over 76 years
India and UN
India was one of the founding members of the United Nations. Even before getting independence, India signed the Declaration by the UN in 1944 at Washington. India also participated in the United Nations Conference from April 25 to June 26, 1945, in San Francisco. India supports the purpose and principles of the United Nations and made a significant contribution to achieving the goals of the organization. The UN field networks in India are the largest anywhere in the world through the programmes, other offices and funds.
India’s Contribution towards the United Nations
India has been an active member of the United Nations since its inception. In 1946, India became the first country to raise the issue of racism in South Africa in the UN forum.
- India played an important part to draft the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the year 1948.
- The first women president of the UNGA was an Indian. In 1953, Vijayalakshmi Pandit was the president.
- India has contributed to the UN Peaceforming Missions in various parts of the globe.
- India has sent their peacekeeping troops to Egypt, Korea, Haiti, Congo, Somalia, Liberia, Lebanon, Rwanda, South Sudan, etc.
- India has been regularly one of the largest contributors of troops.
- UN principles are immensely affected by Mahatma Gandhi’s idea of non-violence.
- In 2014, UNGA declared June 21st as International Yoga Day.
