State and UT Animals
Nature and biodiversity are abundant in India. Animal and bird species of all kinds can be found in nature. India’s flora and animals add to its vibrancy. Each of India’s 28 states & 8 union territories has its own State or union territory animal. Blackbuck is the state animal in Andhra Pradesh, and the recently-designated Snow Leopard is the UT Wildlife of Ladakh.

National Animal of India
India’s national animal is the Royal Bengal Tiger. Panthera Tigris is the animal’s scientific name. In April 1973, the status was granted.
Facts About National Animal of India – Tiger
- The most prominent member of the cat family is the tiger.
- The Royal Bengal, Indo-Chinese, Sumatra, Amur or Siberian, Indo – China, Caspian, Java, and Bali tiger are among the eight recognised subspecies. Tigers in the Caspian, Java, and Bali regions were exterminated to extinction.
- Tiger prefers the lowlands and is usually spotted in mangroves, meadows, and marshes. The royal tigers have adapted by becoming avid swimmers, making the Bengal mangrove ecology a wonderful home for them.
- The lion served as India’s national animal up until 1972.
- On November 18, 1972, a Royal Bengal Tiger, a “majestic beast,” was designated as the country’s emblem.
- Bangladesh, Korea, Vietnam, & Malaysia all have tigers as their national animals. The “Tiger Capital of India” is Nagpur.
- The tiger is classified as an endangered species on the IUCN Red List.
- Due to hunting, shooting, illicit trafficking of Tiger Skin and other body parts, and other factors, there has been a sudden decline in the tiger population.
- The Indian government started Operation Tiger in 1973 to protect tigers.
