Election and Powers of India’s President

Details of the credentials, election, and disqualification of the Indian President are provided in Part V (The Federation) of the Constitution, Chapter I (The Executive). Part V of the Constitution, Articles 52 to 78, pacts with the Union Executive. The Indian President is also the leader of the country’s executive, legislative, and judicial branches.

The President is in office for five years, beginning on the day he takes office. He can resign from his position at any time by sending a letter of resignation to the Vice-President. Furthermore, he can be removed from office before the end of his term through the impeachment process. The President can stay in office beyond his five-year term until his successor takes over. He is also up for re-election to that position.

The Electoral College, which includes the members elected of both Houses of Parliament, the board politicians of the legislative bodies of the states, and the elected politicians of the legislative bodies of the Union Government of Delhi and Puducherry, chooses the President of India, and its members have preferential representation. Draupadi Murmu: India’s 15th President

The outcome of the Presidential Campaign 2022 resulted in the country’s 15th President. Draupadi Murmu, nominated by the BJP as the Indian Democratic Alliance’s candidate, defeated opposition leader Yashwant Sinha in the Presidential elections of 2022.

According to the support offered by various sides of politics, Draupadi Murmu has always had a clear advantage over the opponent Yashwant Sinha in the Presidential Election 2022. The voter turnout for the elections ended on July 18, with over 99 per cent of the 4,796 eligible voters, including 771 MPs and 4,025 MLAs, participating.

1. Rajendra Prasad, M.D.

Dr Rajendra Prasad served as India’s first President for 2 terms. He was also the National Independence Movement’s Chief Leader and the Regional Parliament’s President. In 1962, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna.

2. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, M.D.

Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888, recognised as Teacher’s Day. In 1954, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna.

3. Zakir Husain, M.D.

Dr Zakir Husain was India’s first Muslim President and died in office. V.V. Giri, the instantaneous Vice President, was named acting President. Following that, Supreme Court’s Chief Justice Court Mohammad Hidayatullah served as acting President from July 20 to August 24, 1969.

The Government of India awarded Mohammad Hidayatullah the Padma Bhushan in the art industry in 2002. He also brought about a revolution in Indian education.

4. Giri, V. V.

V.V Giri was India’s fourth President. Varahagiri Venkata Giri was his full name. He became the first independent candidate to be elected President. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1975.

5. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed seemed to be India’s fifth President. He was the 2nd President to pass away while in office. Acting President BD Jattha was appointed.

6. Sanjeeva Reddy, Neelam

Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy was elected as India’s sixth President. He was Andhra Pradesh’s first Chief Minister. He was elected directly to the Lok Sabha speaker post and was the youngest President to occupy Rashtrapati Bhavan and run for President twice.

7. Giani Zail Singh

Before becoming President, he served as Chief Minister of Punjab and Cabinet Minister. On the Indian Postal Service Bill, he likewise utilised Pocket Veto. Many incidents occurred during his presidency, including Operation Blue Star, Indira Gandhi’s assassination, and the 1984 anti-Sikh violent protests.

8. Venkataraman R.

R. Venkataraman served as India’s President from July 25, 1987, to July 25, 1992. He previously served as India’s Vice President from 1984 to 1987. He has received numerous honours from around the world. He was awarded the “Tamra Patra” for his significant contribution to India’s liberation struggle. In addition, the Russian government awarded former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Kumaraswami Kamaraj the Soviet Territory Prize for his travelogue.

9. Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma

Before becoming President, he served as India’s eighth Vice President. He served as Chief Minister of Bhopal from 1952 to 1956 and as a Cabinet Minister from 1956 to 1967. Due to their numerous accomplishments in the legal profession, the Global Bar Association awarded them the ‘Living Great player of Law Award of Recognition.’

10. K R Narayanan

K. R. Narayanan was India’s first Dalit President and the very first Malayali to hold the highest office in the country. He became the first President to cast a vote in Lok Sabha elections and address the state legislature.

11. Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

Dr A. P.J. Abdul Kalam became known as the “Missile Man of India.” He was the inaugural scientist to be elected President of India and the first to receive the most votes. Rohini-1 spacecraft, Agni and Prithvi rockets were successfully launched under his direction. Following the original nuclear test in 1974, he played a critical political, organisational, and technical role in the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in India in 1998. In 1997, he was bestowed the Bharat Ratna.

12. Shrimati Pratibha Singh Patil

Before becoming President, she was indeed the Governor of Rajasthan. She served five terms in the Maharashtra Legislative Council from 1962 to 1985 and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Amravati in 1991. Not only that, but she was the first female president to fly a Sukhoi.

13. Pranab Mukherjee

Before running for president, Pranab Mukherjee was the minister of finance in the national government. In 1997, he received the best Parliamentary Award; in 2008, he received the Padma Vibhushan, Nation’s second civilian honour. He died on Monday, August 31, 2020, at the age of 84.

14. Ram Nath Kovind

Ram Nath Kovind was born in Uttar Pradesh, India, on October 1, 1945. He is a lawyer and politician from India. He was India’s 14th and current President. He was elected President of India on July 25, 2017, and is a representative of the BJP. He was previously the Governor of Bihar. His approach to political conflicts earned him praise from all sides of the political aisle. His accomplishments as Governor included the establishment of a judiciary committee to investigate university corruption.

15. Draupadi Murmu

On July 21, 2022, Draupadi Murmu was inaugurated as India’s 15th President. Draupadi Murmu was born on 20th June 1958 in Uparbeda village, Mayurbhanj district, Odisha, to Biranchi Narayan Tudu and a Santali tribal family. She is indeed a former Jharkhand Governor. Odisha Legislative Assembly awarded Draupadi Murmu the Nilkantha Award for the most outstanding MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) in 2007.
