1. Tehri Dam in Uttarakhand
The Bhagirathi River in Uttarakhand is home to the Tehri Dam, the tallest dam in India. It is 261 metres in length. This dam features a solid rock barrier that is filled with earth.
The first stage of the project was completed in 2006, and the two following phases are currently under way.
2. Bhakra Dam – Himachal Pradesh
The Bhakra Nangal Dam, located on the Sutlej River in Himachal Pradesh, is a concrete gravity dam. With a height of 226 metres and a length of 518 metres, it is the second-highest and largest dam in India. It is Asia’s second-largest Dam.
3. Sardar Sarovar Dam – Gujarat
One of the biggest projects being built or planned on the Narmada river is the Sardar Sarovar Dam, also known as the Narmada Dam. It measures 1210 metres in length and 163 metres in height. It is located in Gujarat. It is an essential component in providing water to Kutch and Saurashtra’s desert region, which is vulnerable to frequent and severe droughts.
4. Hirakud Dam – Odisha
The Hirakud dam was constructed across the Mahanadi River in Odisha.Hirakud dam is the longest earthen dam in the world, measuring 26 kilometres and a height of 61 m. It also houses two observation towers, “Gandhi Minar” and “Nehru Minar”.
5. Nagarjuna Sagar Dam – Telangana
This dam is a concrete dam that runs across the Krishna River in the middle of Andhra Pradesh, Guntur District, and Nalgonda district in Telangana. Also, this dam was built in 1955. It is among the largest dams in India.
Also, it has a multipurpose hydroelectric and irrigation scheme in India. Nagarjuna Sagar Dam provides irrigation to Krishna, Nalgonda, West Godavari, Suryapet, Guntur and Prakasam districts. It is the largest masonry reservoir in the world.

The Indian government uses it for irrigation on 1230 sq km of area. As it is a gravity dam made of concrete, it is a key element in dealing with the water crisis issue in the region. It is one of the biggest reservoirs for water in the nation, with 7,904 454 acres-feet. Its installed capacity is 1000 MW.

Also popular under the name Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar Rihand Dam, it is among the biggest dams that exist in India. Further, this dam is home to a reservoir called Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar. Also, it is among the largest reservoirs in India. This is a gravity-concrete dam that’s present in the Sonbhadra District. This dam helps in providing water for irrigation in Bihar.
