There are a variety of basic machine tools that are used in manufacturing and metalworking. In this article, we will discuss two of the most common types: single and multi-point cutting tools. Single point cutting tools include lathes, drills, milling machines, and grinders. Multi-point cutting tools include saws, punches, and dies. Each type of tool has its unique applications in the manufacturing process. Let’s take a closer look at each one!

What Are Machine Tools?

A machine tool is a power-driven device used to shape or from metal, wood, and other rigid materials by cutting. Machine tools are commonly powered by electricity and use different types of cutting tools depending on the material being shaped. The most common type of tools used in machining operations are single-point cutting tools and multi-point cutting tools.

Single-Point Cutting Tool

A single point cutting tool is used in turning and boring operations where the workpiece remains stationary while a wheel that rotates around its own axis moves back and forth as it cuts into the work material, forming chips as it goes. The method of cutting is called machining by sliding shear. The single point cutting tool is composed of a head, shank and rake face.

Multi-Point Cutting Tool

A multi-point cutting tool has two or more cutting edges that are simultaneously in contact with the work material as opposed to a single-point cutting tool which only has one active edge at any given time. Multi-point cutting tools are used in milling operations where the workpiece is moved while the tool remains stationary. The method of cutting is called machining by peripheral force. The multi-point cutting tool is composed of a head, shank and flutes (or helix).

The choice between using a single point or multi-point cutting tool depends on the intended application, the material to be cut, and other factors.

Machine Tool Applications

The machine tool is an important piece of equipment in manufacturing operations as they allow for controlled cutting that can be difficult or impossible to do by hand. Machine tools are used in a wide variety of applications including woodworking, sheet metal fabrication and repair, computer numerical control (CNC) machining, and many others.

How Is The Cutting Tool Of A Milling Machine Mounted?

The arbour is a shaft that the cutter is mounted on. The milling machine table moves up and down, left to right, and front to back on the column. This allows the cutter to be positioned in different places on the workpiece. There are two types of mills: horizontal and vertical. In a horizontal mill, the table moves the workpiece in a left to the right direction. In a vertical mill, the table moves up and down. The single point cutting tool moves against the work part to provide a planar surface; other geometries may be obtained by moving the work relative to the cutter. Metal is removed from the work part by advancing (or feeding) the tool into the rotating work. The depth of cut is controlled by advancing or retracting (or feeding) the tool in a direction at right angles to its axis of rotation.

Advantages Of Basic Machine Tools

Single and Multi-point Cutting Tools are the most important tools that are used in a machine shop. They can be either hand or power operated. Single point cutting tools include lathe tools, milling cutters, drills, and reamers. Multi-point cutting tools include saws, taps and dies, and broaches.

The advantages of basic machine tools are:

  • They can be used to create a variety of shapes and sizes.
  • They can be used to produce accurate and precise cuts.
  • They can be used to create smooth surfaces.
  • They are durable and long-lasting.
  • They are relatively inexpensive.

Conclusion

Basic machine tools are an important part of any shop. They allow us to create the parts we need for our projects. In this blog post, we’ve looked at the most common basic machine tools and their uses. We hope you found this information helpful and that it has given you a better understanding of what these tools can do. If you have any questions about basic machine tools or how to use them, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’re always happy to help students learn more about the world of machining.
