The full form of RTC is Real-Time-Clock where (RTC) is a type of computer clock that records the current time. The RTC, as its name implies, preserves time in real state. Computer motherboards & embedded systems that require access to the time include RTC. A unique internal battery often powers RTC to keep the time. Consequently, the RTC clock continues to function even after the system’s power is switched off.

Insights Of Real-Time-Clock

RTCs are required to maintain the correct time even though the device is inactive since they are frequently used as triggers to switch on the device or start events like alarm clocks. RTC ICs are powered by a separate source, enabling continuous operation at minimal power or even while the computer is off. Older systems use lithium batteries for their ICs, whereas more recent ones use supercapacitors or auxiliary batteries. One may use supercapacitor-based RTC ICs, and they are rechargeable.

However, the RTC is often composed of a single battery on motherboards made for consumers, which, when removed, causes the RTC to restart. Unlike most hardware clocks, RTC ICs use a crystal oscillator to regulate time rather than rely on clock signals.RTC ICs ensure that all processes are appropriately synchronised, in addition to being in charge of the timing system’s clock function and clock. Although some may contend that the system clock should be in charge of synchronisation, the system clock is reliant on the RTC, putting the RTC indirectly accountable.

History Of Real Time Clock

Real-time clocks were implemented as a less expensive and more precise timekeeping mechanism than software versions in specialised computer architectures such as PDP-8s, IBM System/360s, and Novas. A fundamental aspect of computer architecture has been using a precise clock to monitor computing activities and processes. RTC modules first appeared in 1988, thanks to Dallas Semiconductor materials, and they quickly spread thanks to China’s component manufacturing sector.

Why We Need Real-Time-Clock

Many modern goods are battery-powered and have no or little access to power sources for battery replacement or recharge. The gadgets’ battery would rapidly run out if all algorithms and sensor functions were constantly functioning due to the absence of power sources. The internal clock and electronics of the RTC continue to work even when microcontrollers are already in deep sleep or a low-power state to ensure accurate timekeeping & alarm functionalities. In this mode, the current draw will be as low as 0.5uA.
