WWF Full Form

WWF refers to the World Wildlife Fund or World Wildlife Fund for Nature which was founded on April 29, 1961. This organisation preserves the wildlife and also decreases the impact of humans on the atmosphere. The founders of World Wildlife Fund are; Prince Philip, Prince Bernhard, Peter Scott, Godfrey A. Rockefeller, Julian Huxley, Max Nicholson and Guy Montfort. It has its headquarters in Switzerland. The president of WWF is Pavan Sukhdev with Direct General Macro Lambertini. It reduces the damage to the environment and improves the ecology of the wildlife or plants. They help the local communities in order to conserve the sustainable life natural resources as well as in protecting species with their habitats. It is represented by the Panda symbol. They publish the Living Planet Report after every two years which depends on biological diversity and impact of humans on the natural environment. Healthy Grown, Debt for nature swap, Marine Stewardship Council and Earth Hour are some of the campaigns of WWF. The World Wildlife Fund has it’s Regional Office in Australia.

History of World Wildlife Fund

Victor Stolan was the first person who proposed the World Wildlife Fund to Sir Julian Huxley when Sir Julian Huxley published his article in The Observer, the British newspaper. This led to the contact of Victor Stolan to Edward Max Nicholson; he gave the name to the organisation with the logo of the original panda by Sir Peter Scott. The World Wildlife Fund was finally established on April 29, 1961 in the headquarters of the International Union for Conservation of Nature in Switzerland at Morges. The establishment of WWF led to the “Morges Manifesto” signing.

The organisation changed its name from World Wildlife Fund to World Wildlife Fund for Nature in 1986 which was the year of WFF’s 25th anniversary.

There are 6 main working areas in which World Wildlife Fund works and they are;

Panda Logo of WWF

The World Wildlife Fund is pictorially represented by the Panda symbol as a logo which originated from a Chi Chi named panda who was transferred in 1958 from Beijing Zoo to London Zoo. This was the first panda at that time in the western country to be endangered. WWF also wanted some animals which would have their impact in black and white pictorial printing. Sir Peter Scott was the one who designed the panda logo from Gerald Watterson’s sketch. The logo was renewed in 1978 and in 1986 again. The font of WWF’s initials also changed in the year 2000.
