UID stands for Unique Identification Number (Aadhaar Card), is defined as the unique number given to each and every individual so that the person gets identified separately and uniquely. It is the initiative of UIDAI of the government of India which stands for the Unique Identification Authority of India. It is made up of 12 unique digits that can only be issued for those who are either citizens of India or the foreigner who have spent approximately 182 days in India. The term ‘unique’ here refers to the numbers which are used once for a particular person as an identity proof. The first chairman of UIDAI was Nandan Nilekani who was the Infosys Co-founder. Unique Identification Number was first introduced in 2009 on 28 January. The two main purposes of UID is direct transfer and identification.

Unique Identification Authority
It is the statutory governing body which develops the concept of UID (Unique Identification Number). The government of India established this authority on July 12, 2016 but initially it was set up in 2009, January. The Unique Identification Authority was designed to deal with the planning and implementation of the Unique Identification Number for all the residents. Industrial Model Township, Manesar was the data center of UIDAI which on January 7, 2013 Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the Haryana’s Chief Minister, conducted the inauguration. They also introduced PVC aadhaar cards which provide additional safety to the identity like holograms, invisible logos, ghost images, guilloche patterns, micro text and many more. The chief executive of UIDAI is Dr. Saurabh Garg.

Uses of Aadhaar
The uses of Aadhaar card includes;
For enabling the biometric attendance for checking the attendance of government employees
For direct transferring the benefits like subsidy, MGNREGA and LPG benefits
It has become mandatory for passports
The mobile SIM number is also linked to the Aadhar card
It is also linked to the ration card
It also helps in generating e-KYC (Electronic Know Your Customer)
