Difference between TGT and PGT
The terms TGT and PGT often are the cause of confusion. They are often confused between and sometimes also used interchangeably by unaware individuals which is totally incorrect. While TGT stands for Trained Graduate Teachers, PGT stands for Post Graduate Teachers. TGT faculty are entrusted with the responsibility of catering to students from classes 6 to 10, while the PGT are required to teach the students of plus two. In order to apply for TGT, one has to clear paper 2 of the CTET exam, while that is not the case with PGT qualification. PGT applicants pursue B.Ed. courses after their post-graduation, while the TGT applicants pursue them after the graduation itself.
To summarise, the following are the important points
TGT teaches classes 6 to 10 while PGT teaches classes 11 and 12
TGT applicants are required to clear paper 2 of the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET), while PGT applicants are not required to do so
TGT applicants pursue B.Ed. after graduation, whereas PGT applicants pursue the course after completing their post-graduation
CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test)
The TGT applicants are required to clear paper 2 of the CTET exam in order to get the certification. CTET is conducted twice a year by the central government to test the eligibility of applicants, aspiring to teach the students from classes 1 to 8. The CTET exam consists of two papers- 1 and 2. The applicants interested in teaching classes 1 to 5 take paper 1 while others, who are interested in teaching classes 6 to 8, actually have to clear both the papers. The eligibility criteria for appearing in the CTET exam (paper 2 for TGT) is as follows (anyone):
