The abbreviation TGT refers to Trained Graduate Teacher. This term is used to refer to the teachers who have already graduated and completed their course in B.Ed. The applicants can pursue a B.Ed. degree based on the specialisation they prefer and from any of the private or public universities in India. The examination for TGT qualification(CTET) is conducted by the central government.TGT teachers are eligible to teach up to the tenth grade in India.

Difference between TGT and PGT

The terms TGT and PGT often are the cause of confusion. They are often confused between and sometimes also used interchangeably by unaware individuals which is totally incorrect. While TGT stands for Trained Graduate Teachers, PGT stands for Post Graduate Teachers. TGT faculty are entrusted with the responsibility of catering to students from classes 6 to 10, while the PGT are required to teach the students of plus two. In order to apply for TGT, one has to clear paper 2 of the CTET exam, while that is not the case with PGT qualification. PGT applicants pursue B.Ed. courses after their post-graduation, while the TGT applicants pursue them after the graduation itself.

CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test)

The TGT applicants are required to clear paper 2 of the CTET exam in order to get the certification. CTET is conducted twice a year by the central government to test the eligibility of applicants, aspiring to teach the students from classes 1 to 8. The CTET exam consists of two papers- 1 and 2. The applicants interested in teaching classes 1 to 5 take paper 1 while others, who are interested in teaching classes 6 to 8, actually have to clear both the papers. The eligibility criteria for appearing in the CTET exam (paper 2 for TGT) is as follows (anyone):

  • Graduation and passing or appearing in the final year exams of the two-year Diploma in Elementary Education

  • Graduation with at least 50 per cent exams and passed or appearing in final year exams of one-year B.Ed. course

  • Graduation with at least 45 per cent marks and passed or appearing in the final year exam of one-year B.Ed. course

  • Graduated senior secondary with at least 50 per cent marks and passed or appeared in the final year of BA/B.Sc.Ed or BA.Ed/B.Sc.Ed

  • Graduated senior secondary with at least 50 per cent marks and passed or appeared in the final year of B.EI.Ed

  • Graduation with at least 50 per cent marks and passed or appearing in one-year B.Ed. in Special Education
