MB Full Form

Megabytes are basically used for measuring the space of a hard drive or the space of memory and megabits are used for identifying the speed of the internet.

Introduction

The term megabits define the speed of the internet-connection and it is measured as megabits per second or Mbps. On the other hand, the term megabytes define the availability of storage in the device. Hence, both the terms are completely different. This chapter is going to discuss the basic concept of both the measuring units and also try to find out the conceptual difference between both the units.

Full form of Mb

There are basically two types of the full form of Mb and both the terms are used for measuring two different objectives.

The first full of Mb is megabytes, which allow defining the storage of any hard-drive or any memory. This term is also used for measuring the size of any files or documents. This is basically the multiplication of unit bytes of digital information. The basic unit of measuring storage in kilobytes (Kb) and an Mb is measured as 1024 Kb. Moreover, 1Mb is defined as one million bytes of digital information.

The other full form of Mb is megabits, which is also used for measuring purposes and measures internet speed. The measurement of Mb is also important to identify the time required to download any files. For example, with 100 Mbps speed, one can download 12.5 MB of data in a second and to download a file with a size of 100 MB with the same internet speed, less than 8 minutes of time required. Hence, both the measuring unit is used for different purposes, but both of them define the size of digital-information or data.

Difference between megabytes per second and megabits per second

Both the terms look the same and it can create confusion easily. The megabytes per second are expressed with uppercase “B”, while the megabits per second are expressed with lowercase “b”. One MBps is defined as 8 Mbps. Therefore, MBps is always larger in size compared to Mbps. Mbps is used for expressing the maximum speed of the network provided by the internet service provider (ISP). The MBps shows the speed of transfer of the data in the storage. For example, MBps is used to measure the speed of downloading a file on a computer.

Moreover, the difference is also defined as the actual download-speed and internet speed. For example, with an internet connection of 100 Mbps, anyone can get a download speed of 12 MBps. In practical situations, the speed of Mbps is too ineffective for broadband-connection. However, one MBps of data can store, song of one minute, 30 seconds of video, or 9 to 10 web pages. Therefore, both the term MBps and Mbps are quite the same but the capability of providing data is different from each other. However, it is important to know both concepts. The use of broadband is increasing with time. The service provider uses the term 100 Mbps or 150 Mbps. It does not mean that one can download 100 MB of data in a second. Therefore, a clear concept on both the terms is required to identify the actual performance of speed in real-time.

Marketing strategies with Mbps

The value of Mbps is always lesser than the value of MBps. Due to this reason; most of the ISPs have used Mbps as their marketing strategies to design their packages. The value that comes up with Mbps always shows a higher amount and that attracts the potential consumers. On the other hand, the same speed with MBps provides less numerical value. Moreover, ISPs and other speed-check websites always show the internet-speed in Mbps units. If the consumers check the speed in MBps they can actually find the difference between their purchase speed and how much speed they are actually getting.

Therefore, service providers use the Mbps units as their marketing tactics to make the plan more exciting for the consumers. The proper knowledge of the relation between MBps and Mbps helps the consumers to identify their internet packs as per their actual requirements.

Conclusion

From the above discussion, it can be concluded that MB is useful for measuring the internet speed as well as the download speed. Discussion on the basic concept of MB defines that the value of MBps is 8 times higher than the value of Mbps. Additionally, the basic difference between Mbps and MBps is also highlighted in this discussion. Moreover, the marketing tactics of ISPs with Mbps are also analyzed here. The discussion on various FAQs also helps the readers to get a more in-depth understanding of both the MBps and Mbps.
