James Bullough Lansing is a loudspeaker designer of loudspeaker and engineer of audio devices who founded two companies named JBL and Altec Lansing. In 1927, Lansing started a company with his partner Ken Decker in Los Angeles. The company was manufacturing speaker drivers for radio sets and radio consoles. On March 1, 1927, the company was named Lansing Manufacturing Company. In 1933, the company was producing bass drivers and compression drivers for the audio department of MGM. The company was closely working with Shearer Horn and later developed an Iconic system of loudspeakers for movies.
History of the Company
In 1939, Ken Decker died due to a plane crash and it caused a significant amount of financial trouble for the company. Later, the company was bought by Altec Lansing. Lansing left Altec Lansing after his contract expired in 1946. He founded a firm named Lansing Sound which was later named as “James B Lansing Sound”. This organization is known as “JBL Sound”. The first original product that was produced by the company was a 15-inch transducer that was named D130. The 8 inch D208 and a 12 inch D131 were two other products that were popular at that time. The company received a modest investment and space from the Marquardt Corporation. Marquardt had taken over the various operations of JBL in 1948.
On the other hand, in 1949, the General tire company purchased Marquardt and the new company was not interested in the audio hardware business. As a result, JBL cut off its ties with the tire company and bought a location in Los Angeles for a new division. The company struggled to create sustainable profit in the market and due to some personal issues, Lansing committed suicide on 4th September 1949. Lansing had life insurance of 10,000 dollars and the company was named as the sole beneficiary. After his death, the company was passed on to the vice president of the company Bill Thomas. The life insurance had led to the continuation of the business even after a huge financial loss of the company. Bill Thomas bought one-third of the company which was the share of Lansing and became the owner of JBL.
