Introducing HSC

School in India starts after eight years of basic school and is separated into two years of secondary education (classes IX and X) and two years of senior secondary education (classes X and Y) (classes XI and XII). In order to graduate from the secondary phase (class X), students must pass a series of exams given by an external organisation, either a state or a national (All-India) examination board. Passing the secondary exams results in the awarding of a certificate, often referred to as the Secondary School Certificate, or SSC. These kids are entitled to continue their education in senior secondary school. Following the SSC, the HSC is the next major examination to be held. Following an examination of the curriculum and teaching methodologies, as well as the low interaction between teachers and students, the overemphasis placed on the learning of the English language, indiscipline, and other factors, the commission recommended a restructuring of the secondary education system in order to introduce diversity into the educational system at the secondary level. The commission proposed five years for elementary education, followed by three years of lower-secondary education, followed by four years of upper secondary education, and finally a specialised three-year course for a first-degree certificate or diploma. Based on the recommendations of the commission, the government turned the then-existing schools into upper secondary multipurpose schools, and 250 multipurpose schools were constructed in the first plan, which was implemented in the following year.

An Overview of HSC

Since 1989, all Indian states have transitioned to a 12-year elementary/secondary cycle known as the Standard cycle. A second examination is administered by the associated board of the school where the student is enrolled after two years in senior secondary school. If the student passes the examination, he or she is granted the Higher Secondary (School) Certificate (HSC/HSSC). At the conclusion of class XI, there are other exams that are given internally by individual secondary schools. There are a total of 47 state examination boards and three national examination boards in the United States. They are also responsible for developing the curriculum for the Higher Secondary Certificate Examination (HSC), which is administered by 47 state boards and three national boards.

Becoming Familiar with the Framework

States have a wide range of requirements for state exams, but in general, students are required to take four or five topics in each session. In Year XII, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) requires pupils to study five topics that are externally examined, as well as several internally graded courses (general studies, work experience and physical and health education). If a student fails a course, they will not be able to graduate. The CISCE awards a pass certificate to applicants who pass four (or five) subjects (which must include English) at the same test sitting and pass the internally evaluated significantly active and beneficial work (SUPW) / work experience and community service. Assessment

Subjects in Year XI are evaluated on an internal basis. The paper is assigned by either a state or a national awarding agency in Year XII, and students are evaluated by external exams. Some disciplines additionally involve practical exams that are set by an external examiner and are required to be completed.

In most cases, students who complete the HSC are qualified for university entrance, while certain elite schools and universities may need them to take additional admissions exams. A grade of at least 80 percent on the High School Diploma from a state board of education may be sufficient to meet entrance criteria, provided that a sufficient level of English has already been achieved. Students who get excellent marks (75 percent) from CBSE and CISCE courses may be able to meet the admissions standards if they have achieved a sufficient level of English proficiency. Competitive state- or national-level entrance tests are required for admission to professional programmes (such as engineering, architecture, medicine, and other related fields). The All-India Pre-Medical / Pre-Dental Examination and the Joint Entrance Examination (for Indian Institutes of Technology) are three examples of such tests. Some Indian institutions are converting their three-year programmes into four-year degrees (following the model of the United States), which may need the revision of admissions standards, as in the case of the University of Delhi.
