Health centres minimise health inequalities by emphasising coordinated care administration of patients with different health care requirements and using critical quality improvement measures, such as health information technology.

The services offered are determined by the requirements of individuals, families, and the local community. Most community health programme financing encourages flexibility in service delivery and allows CHSs to create care models tailored to their communities’ requirements. On the other hand, targeted programmes provide specific assistance to disadvantaged populations.

Community health services emphasise health promotion and illness management, and prevention to improve local inhabitants’ health and well-being while relieving demand on the critical care health system.

Objectives of Community Health Services

Community health services strive to promote local citizens’ health and well-being through:

CHCs in various countries

Canada

CHCs (Community Health Centres) have been around in Ontario for over 40 years. The Mount Carmel Clinic, which opened in 1926, was Canada’s inaugural CHC. Local community service centres, abbreviated as CLSC in French, provide regular health and social care services in Quebec, including walk-in and appointment-based consultations with medical doctors.

Portugal

The health centre was indeed the National Health Service in Portugal’s basic regional primary healthcare unit and the public health authority. Typically, each health centre serves one or more Portuguese localities, but multiple facilities may serve municipalities with more than 15,000 residents. Primary care doctors, public health specialists, nurses, social workers, and administrative staff worked at the health facilities.

In 2008, roughly 70 health centre groups, or ACES, were formed from the more than 300 health facilities. Each ACES has multiple families and customised healthcare units, currently the Portuguese National Health Service’s fundamental primary healthcare providers. ACES also includes public health, community health, other speciality units, basic medical emergency personnel, and family health care services.

USA

Community Health Clinics (CHCs) are local health centres in the United States that assist medically underserved areas (MUAs), including unemployed, underinsured, poor, or live in areas with limited access to basic health care. Some health facilities have been renovated with new technology and computerised medical records, thanks to federal and municipal funding. The National Association for Community Health Centres established a plan in 2006 to provide free, quick HIV testing to every patient aged 13 to 64 at routine primary health and dental appointments.
