Packaging plays a prominent role in the marketing point of view. The process of packing covers and protects the products by containers or boxes to prevent breakage during transportation, whereas the process of packaging protects the products and identifies the particular brand of a particular company. The packaging gives information about the company and its brand through labelling. Packaging makes the customers to get attracted through its appearance and design. Goods with good packaging are often better sellers in the market than the other goods. Packing is a part of the packaging. It is done by using various protective materials.
Packing
Packing is wrapping or covering the products for safe storage and easy transportation to prevent spoilage and breakage of products and goods. It involves a set of activities like cushioning, wrapping, sealing, weatherproofing etc. Materials like packing trays, bubble wrap, packing tape, foam etc., are used for packing.
Packaging
Packaging is the operation of branding and designing the product for storage and marketing purposes. It is a process of designing a product’s package such as container, wrapper or bag etc. It helps to make good marketing relationship with the customers. The main purpose of packaging is to appeal to and attract the customer, and the other purpose is the protection of the product. It plays a major role in boosting the performance of sales of a business. Packaging is categorised into three levels or layers. They are
1. Primary packaging
2. Secondary packaging
3. Tertiary packaging
Primary Packaging
It is the immediate packaging of the product. It remains with the product until it is used. For example, matchbox for match sticks, oil tin for oil, small plastic container for zandubalm etc.
Secondary Packaging
It is the additional packaging for more protection. Customers throw away when they start using the product—for example, a small box for zandubalm number of bottles wrapped in a box.
Tertiary Packaging
It is also called transportation packaging. This type of packaging is used for storing and transporting goods. This type of packaging is regarded as packing. Materials like cardboard boxes, papers, sawdust are used as Protective materials.
There are many types of packaging like corrugated boxes, paperboard boxes, plastic boxes, poly bags, foil sealed bags, chipboard packaging etc. Corrugated boxes are nothing but boxes made of cardboard which is three-layered. It is used for packing shoes and also used as storage boxes. They can be recycled and reused. Paperboard boxes are made up of paper, easy to cut and used for personalised packaging. It is used for the packaging of cosmetics, medicines, frozen food etc. Plastic box packaging is durable, used to preserve perishable products and eliminates the issues of contamination and spoilage. They are cost-effective and recyclable.
