Vertical Launch Short-range Surface-To-Air Missile (VL-SRSAM)

Why in the News?

Recently, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) tested the Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VL-SRSAM), off the Chandipur coast in Odisha.

Key Points:

About VL-SRSAM

    • VL-SRSAM is a canisterised system, which means it is stored and operated from specially designed compartments.
    • The VL-SRSAM has been designed to strike high-speed airborne targets at the range of 40 to 50 km and at an altitude of around 15 km.
  • Key Features:
      • Cruciform Wings: The cruciform wings are four small wings arranged like a cross on four sides and give the projective a stable aerodynamic posture.
      • Thrust Vectoring: It is an ability to change the direction of the thrust from its engine to control the angular velocity and the attitude of the missile.
  • Utility:
    • It is equipped with an indigenous Radio Frequency (RF) seeker and possesses the ability to intercept the target with high accuracy.
    • It is meant for neutralising various aerial threats at close ranges including sea-skimming targets.

It will prove to be a force multiplier for the Navy.
