- Swachh Survekshan has been conducted by MoHUA since 2016.
- Goal:
- To encourage citizen participation
- Create awareness
- Significance:
- Foster a spirit of healthy competition.

About SWACHH BHARAT MISSION-URBAN 2.0
- The announcement for the launch of SBM first phase was made on 15th August 2014.
- Objectives:
- Eradication of open defecation in all statutory towns;
- 100% scientific management of municipal solid waste in all statutory towns;
- effecting behaviour change through Jan Andolan.
- SBM-U 2.0 was announced in Budget 2021-22 and is the continuation of SBM-U first phase.
- Aims:
- To make all cities ‘Garbage Free’ and ensure grey and black water management in all cities other than those covered under AMRUT.
- Make all urban local bodies as ODF+ and those with a population of less than 1 lakh as ODF++.
- Focus:
- Segregation of solid waste
- Utilizing the principles of 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle)
- Scientific processing of all types of municipal solid waste
- Remediation of legacy dumpsites for effective solid waste management.
