Why are stapled visas issued by China?
- China issues ‘stapled visas’ to Indian citizens from Arunachal Pradesh because it does not recognise India’s claim over Arunachal Pradesh.
- China recognises the stapled visas as valid, but India rejects them as legal travel documents.
- China disputes the boundary between Tibet and British India (McMahon Line).
- It refers to the roughly 90,000 square kilometers of Arunachal Pradesh that make up its claimed territory as “South Tibet” or “Zangnan” on Chinese maps.
- It is an attempt to weaken India’s control over these regions by giving stapled visas to Indian citizens from Jammu and Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh.
- China recently released the “2023 edition of the standard map of China”, which shows the entire State of Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin within China’s borders.
