Why in the News?
Recently, the government has proposed to introduce the ‘right to repair’ law.
Right to Repair:
- The department of consumer affairs has set up a committee to develop a right to repair framework.
- Under this, it would be mandatory for manufacturers to share their product details with customers so that they can either repair themselves or by a third party.
1. Product covered under ‘right to repair’:
Mobile phones/tablets, consumer electronics, automobiles, and farming equipment.
2. Aim:
- To empower the consumer and product buyers
- To cut obsolescence rate
- To reduce e-waste in the country
3. Countries that offer right to repair:
It has been recognised in many countries, including the US, UK, and European Union.
