For the first time in the history of the Rajya Sabha, the chairman has nominated four female parliamentarians to the panel of vice-chairpersons, giving women equal representation.

About the Panel:

  • Art 118 (1) of the Constitution: It empowers each House of Parliament to make rules for regulating its Procedure and the Conduct of its business. 
  • The Chairman of Rajya Sabha selects a panel of vice-chairpersons from among the members. 
  • This panel serves until a new panel of vice-chairpersons is nominated.

Vacant Position of Chairman or Deputy Chairman

Presiding Over the House

Either the Chairman or Deputy Chairman may preside

No member of the vice-chairpersons can preside




Why in news?

  • For the first time in the history of the Rajya Sabha, the chairman has nominated four female parliamentarians to the panel of vice-chairpersons, giving women equal representation.
  • The MPs are PT Usha, Phangnon Konyak, Fauzia Khan, and Sulata Deo, all first-time members of the Rajya Sabha.
