- The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) recently conducted a test of the next-generation torpedo release system known as the Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) System.
About SMART System:
- Developer: Designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
- Launch Location: Launched from a ground mobile launcher at Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, off the Odisha coast.
- Features:
- Purpose: This missile-based mechanism enables the launching of lightweight torpedoes, targeting submarines at distances far beyond the conventional range of lightweight torpedoes.
- Usage: It is especially useful when quick action is needed against enemy submarines detected at a distance, without relying on other assets.
- Design: The system is canister-based and integrates advanced subsystems including two-stage solid propulsion and precision inertial navigation.
- Payload: It carries an advanced lightweight torpedo missile equipped with a parachute-based release mechanism.
