Why in News?
- India has expressed strong objections to China regarding its construction activities in the Shaksgam Valley, a region India claims but it is controlled by Pakistan and has been subject to contentious activities by China.
About Shaksgam Valley:
- Location and Control:
- Shaksgam Valley, also known as the Trans Karakoram Tract, is located in the Hunza-Gilgit region of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK).
- It borders China’s Xinjiang Province to the north, Pakistan’s Northern Areas to the south and west, and the Siachen Glacier region to the east.
- Boundary Agreement Provisions between China and Pakistan: The 1963 agreement states that the sovereign authority, after the resolution of the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan, would renegotiate with China concerning the boundary established by the agreement.
