Why in News?
- India has initiated the consolidation of its four airspace regions into a single unified airspace under Project ISHAN.
About Project ISHAN:
- Objective: The Indian Single Sky Harmonized Air Traffic Management (ISHAN) initiative is designed to streamline and enhance air traffic management across India.
- Integration: Plans are underway to unify the four Flight Information Regions (FIRs) located in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai into one continuous airspace based in Nagpur, centralizing Air Traffic Management operations.
- Execution: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has sought expressions of interest for preparing a detailed project report to facilitate this transformation.
Significance:
- The unification is expected to streamline operations, increase air traffic capacity, and reduce congestion, which will benefit airlines and passengers alike by improving efficiency and potentially reducing flight delays.
