About Overview of AMRUT Scheme:
- AMRUT Scheme was launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in 2015.
- The primary objectives were to:
- Ensure every household has access to a tap with assured water supply and a sewerage connection.
- Increase the value of cities by developing greenery and well-maintained open spaces such as parks.
- Reduce pollution by switching to public transport or constructing facilities for non-motorised transport.
About AMRUT 2.0 Scheme:
- It was launched for a period of five years: from (FY: 2021-22 to FY:2025-26).
- Aimed at making cities ‘water secure’ and providing functional water tap connections to all households in all statutory towns.
- Set ambitious targets like providing 100% sewage management in 500 AMRUT cities.
- Total outlay for AMRUT 2.0 is ₹ 2,99,000 crore, with the Central outlay being ₹76,760 crore for five years.
Why in News?
- India’s urban population is expanding rapidly, requiring large investments in urban infrastructure. The AMRUT Scheme objective is to address key challenges like water supply, sewage, and pollution.
