About Harit Nauka Initiative:
- 2024: Launched by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways.
- Objective: Adoption of greener technologies in inland waterway vessels and shifting inland vessels towards sustainable alternatives, such as hydrogen fuel cells.
- Target: By the year 2025, all states must make efforts to have 50% of their inland waterway-based passenger fleets run on green fuels, and by 2045, 100%.
Why in news?
Prime Minster recently launched India’s first indigenously developed hydrogen fuel cell ferry under the Harit Nauka initiative.
More about ferry:
- It was manufactured by the Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).
- It uses a 50-kilowatt PEM (proton-exchange membrane) fuel cell along with Lithium-Ion Phosphate batteries.
- It produces zero emissions or noise, and it is energy-efficient.
