BioTRIG-New Technology for Waste Management: 6 Mar 2024

About BioTRIG:
  • It is a new waste management technology based on the pyrolysis system.
  • The garbage is sealed inside an oxygen-free chamber and heated to a temperature higher than 400 degrees Celsius.
  •  In the process, useful compounds are created:  bio-oil, syngas and biochar fertiliser.
Significance:
  • It could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from communities.
  • The clean-burning bio-oil can replace dirty cooking fuels in homes.
  • It could help rural Indians cut indoor air pollution, improve soil health, and generate clean power.
Pyrolysis:
  • A chemical process in which organic materials are heated in the absence of oxygen, leads to the decomposition of the material into different component molecules.
  • This process is often used to convert biomass and waste materials into valuable products.
Why in news? Researchers say ‘BioTRIG’, can provide multiple benefits to BPL rural communities.
