Katchatheevu Island Controversy: India & Sri Lanka

About Katchatheevu Island:

  • It is a small uninhabited island in Palk Strait, that connects the Bay of Bengal to the Arabian Sea. It was formed in the 14th century by a volcanic eruption.
  • Historical 1974 and 1976 agreements had a huge impact on fishermen’s livelihoods.
  • Since then it has been a matter of concern and recently again the Tamil Nadu government called for the retrieval of Katchatheevu island to end the detention of Indian fishermen by Sri Lanka.
