Why in news?
- Pench Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Maharashtra has been designated as India’s first Dark Sky Park.
- This is the fifth such park in Asia.
About Dark Sky Park:
- It is an area, usually surrounding a park or observatory, that restricts artificial light pollution.
- The IUCN also highlights the need to preserve natural darkness for the sake of nature conservation.
- It is designated by the International Dark Sky Places (IDSP) program.
- Once designated, a Dark Sky Place must follow a four-step process:
- establishing a lighting policy to educate the community.
- implementing dark sky-appropriate lighting.
- engaging in outreach programs to inform stakeholders.
- monitoring the growth and decline of light pollution.
Pench Tiger Reserve:
- Located in the Seoni and Chhindwara districts in Madhya Pradesh and the Nagpur district in Maharashtra as a separate Sanctuary.
- Named after the Pench River, which flows through the Reserve.
- Fauna: Chital, Sambar, Nilgai, Gaur (Indian Bison) and wild boar
