Black Tigers:
- Not a separate species, but a rare color variant of the Bengal Tiger.
- Their unique coat color and pattern are due to a mutation in the Taqpep gene, known as pseudo-melanism.
- Location: All 10 black tigers are found in Odisha’s Similipal Tiger Reserve.
Similipal Tiger Reserve:
- Established in 1956.
- Part of Project Tiger since 1973.
- Declared a biosphere reserve in 1994.
- Included in UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
- Forms part of the Similipal-Kuldiha-Hadgarh Elephant Reserve, also known as Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve.
- Indigenous Tribes: Inhabited by Erenga Kharias and Mankirdias tribes.
Why in News:
- The Indian government recently informed the Parliament that there are 10 black tigers (melanistic tigers) in India.
