19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement – Key Highlights : 23 Jan 2024

  • Recently, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni hosted the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Kampala, Uganda.

Key Points:

  • Location and Theme: Held in Kampala, Uganda, the summit’s theme was “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence”. 
  • Leadership Transition: Uganda took over the chairmanship from Azerbaijan, with its term set to run until 2027.

Kampala Declaration: 

  • The declaration condemned Israeli military actions and advocated for the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions to facilitate humanitarian aid in Gaza.

Non-Aligned Movement

  • 1961: Established in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, NAM was initiated by leaders from Yugoslavia (Josip Broz Tito), Egypt (Gamal Abdel Nasser), India (Jawaharlal Nehru), Indonesia (Sukarno), and Ghana (Kwame Nkrumah).
  • NAM was created as a group of states that chose not to align with either the US or the Soviet Union during the Cold War, aiming to maintain independence or neutrality.
  • Membership: Currently, NAM consists of 120 Member States, 17 Observer Countries, and 10 Observer organizations.
  • Organizational Structure: NAM operates without a permanent secretariat or a formal founding document like a charter, act, or treaty.
  • Summit Frequency: The NAM Summit is typically held every three years.
