Why in news?
- The Indira Gandhi Peace Prize for 2023 has been given to Ali Abu Awwad, a peace activist, and Daniel Barenboim, a classical pianist.
Daniel Barenboim:
- Well-known for his attempts to encourage harmony in West Asia through music.
- From 1992 to January 2023, Barenboim served as the general music director of the Berlin State Opera.
- Awards: Germany’s Great Cross of Merit, Spain’s Prince of Asturias Award and France’s Commander of the Legion of Honour.
Ali Abu Awwad:
- He is a well-known Palestinian advocate for peace.
- In an effort to find a peaceful resolution to the ongoing war in West Asia, he is cooperating with the people of Israel and Palestine.
- He has used Gandhian principles of non-violent action, freedom and dignity for peace efforts.
- Awwad’s efforts toward peace gave rise to the nonviolent Palestinian movement known as Tagheer.
- Tagheer is an autonomous people’s movement committed to social advancement.
