Inauguration of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS)

Background:

  • In 2005, the Planning Commission created a Task Force for a multi-modal transit system for Delhi NCR.
  • The Integrated Transport Plan for NCR 2032 emphasized the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).

About RRTS:

  • RRTS is a high-speed commuter service linking regional points in NCR.
  • Unlike conventional railways, it offers reliable, frequent regional travel at high speeds on a dedicated route.
  • It’s different from metros because it’s designed for longer distances, faster speeds, and fewer stops.

Intended Benefits:

  • Environment Friendly: Expected to cut down 2.5 lakh CO2 tonnes/year of greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Economic Development: Aims to boost public transportation usage from 37% to 63% along the corridor. Promotes balanced economic growth across the region.
  • Sustainable Urbanization: Serves as a model for other high-capacity urban transit corridors in India. Aims to decrease traffic congestion and total transport sector emissions in NCR.

Why in News:

  • Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first leg of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) for Delhi to Meerut.
