The conservation status of India's hoolock gibbon was discussed at the first meeting of The Global Gibbon Network (GGN).

About Hoolock Gibbon: 

  •  It is the only ape found in India.
  • They are intelligent, have individual personalities, and have close family ties like all apes.
  • One of the 20 species of gibbons on Earth is the Hoolock gibbon, which is specific to northeastern India.
  • IUCN  categorises the western hoolock gibbon as endangered and the eastern hoolock gibbon as vulnerable.

 

Why in news?

    • The conservation status of India’s hoolock gibbon was discussed at the first meeting of The Global Gibbon Network (GGN).

  • Apes lack tails, while monkeys generally have tails varying in length and function.
  • Apes possess larger, more complex brains and advanced cognitive abilities, while monkeys have smaller brains and less advanced cognition.
