A record number of manatees converged at a Florida state park this week which is a very unusual phenomenon.

About Manatees:

  • They are large, aquatic mammals that are called sea cows.  
  • They are herbivores that eat over 60 different types of plants. 
  • They are solitary animals and are known to gather in warm waters during colder weather.
  • IUCN Status: Vulnerable 
  • Habitat:  Along the coast from Florida to Brazil,  Amazon River, and the African manatee resides along the west coast of Africa.

Why in news?

  •  A record number of manatees converged at a Florida state park this week which is a  very unusual phenomenon.
  • The recent influx is attributed to a drop in the water temperature in the nearby St Johns River, compelling the manatees to seek warmer waters in the park’s hot springs.
