Child Mortality Has Reduced To 35 Per 1000 Live Birth

Why in the News?

As per the Sample Registration System (SRS) Report 2019, child mortality has reduced from 45 in 2014 to 35 in 2019.

  • Government has also launched ‘Paalan 1000’ app to guide parents. 

Key Points:

  • India has taken rapid strides in reducing child mortality since 2014 from 45 per 1,000 live births to 35 per 1,000 live births in 2019,
  • Child Mortality rate: Child mortality or the under-five mortality rate refers to the probability of a child dying between birth and exactly 5 years of age, expressed per 1,000 live births.
  • Infant Mortality Rate: The infant mortality rate (IMR) is the number of infant deaths in a single year for every 1,000 live births in the same year.

About ‘Paalan 1000’:

    • Govt. launches new app, Paalan 1000, to guide parents.

      • It focuses on the cognitive development of children in the first two years of their life. 
      • The app will provide practical advice to caregivers.
      • The programme is aligned with the mission of the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), emphasing responsive care and focusing interventions on the first 1000 days.
  • 6 principles; 
      • Maximize Love, 
      • Talk & Engage, 
      • Explore through Movement and Play, 
      • Read and Discuss Stories, 
      • Mother’s Engagement with the Child while Breastfeeding 
      • Managing Stress and Staying Calm.
