Farmers in Vietnam adopting innovative techniques to reduce Methane Emissions: 24 April 2024

Why in News:

  • Farmers in Vietnam are adopting innovative techniques to reduce methane emissions by changing how they grow rice.

Rice paddies contribute roughly  8% of human-made methane in the atmosphere.

Innovative Techniques:

  • Irrigation Method: Farmers utilize alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation, reducing water usage compared to traditional methods and subsequently lowering methane production.
  • Drone Usage: Drones are employed for crop fertilization, cutting down on labor costs.
  • Effective Stubble Usage: Instead of burning rice stubble, it is repurposed as livestock feed and for cultivating straw mushrooms, mitigating air pollution.
  • Vietnam is the world’s third-largest rice exporter.
  • Methane traps over 80 times more heat in the atmosphere compared to carbon dioxide.
